Why Sail for a Cure
by Serena Hoermann

When I first met Cynthia it was to pick up her three- year-old for a play date with my son. Cynthia, her husband and son had recently moved to Florida for a new job. It was then that Cynthia discovered the lump in her breast. Further medical problems led her to make the difficult decision to undergo a radical mastectomy followed by intense chemotherapy.

Two weeks following the surgery, Cynthia was very weak. Yet I could tell she was a strong woman. A friendship developed between our two families and today, seven years later, Cynthia remains cancer free. She regularly participates in Walks for the Cure and advocates self-exams and regular medical checkups.

Cynthia survived because of early detection and access to excellent health providers. She also paid a high price to survive. Achieving prevention and finding a cure would mean that others would be saved from enduring what she did.
