Diving the Palm Beaches
Florida's Best Kept Dive Secret

Florida's Best Kept Dive Secret: The warm waters of the Gulfstream bring Jupiter, Florida some of the premier underwater animal watching in this hemisphere. Loggerhead and Hawksbill turtles, Moray eels, Goliath Grouper, and an abundance of tropical marine life fills your bottom time. Jupiter offers a diverse selection of reefs at 70 to 80 feet with a 10 to 20 foot ledge.

Water temperatures range from 78 to 84 degrees in the summer and 70 to 78 in the winter. In addition, the Gulf Stream provides a leisurely current making drift scuba diving a standard in the area. No need to swim back to the boat. When you surface, the boat picks you up. Most scuba dives in the area are guided with flexibility to accommodate experience levels.

Over 10 miles of reef line with 10 to 20 feet of relief provide lots of crevices and ledges for exploration. Florida's Artificial Reef Program has placed several wrecks in the area. Depths range from 72' to over 200' for the technical scuba diver. All of these wrecks offer excellent penetration for the trained scuba diver and attract large schools of fish.

Jupiter scuba diving offers a diver the opportunity to scuba dive 5 wrecks in two dives. The Jupiter Wreck Trek starts with a drop in 90' of water on the Miss Jenny. This inverted barge is home to grouper, snapper and a variety and abundance of fishes. After a thorough tour you will be guided 200 feet north along a staked trail to the Esso Bonaire. The Esso Bonaire is a 185' harbor freighter sitting majestically upright. This wreck is covered with schools of Barracuda, Amberjack and a resident Goliath Grouper.

The second dive is a tour of the three tugs. Strategically placed in 72 feet of water, the tugs are beaming with wildlife. From the first tug, follow the stakes to the second and third, all within a short down current swim.

Newest to the area is the Sea Mist. Sitting at 230' this arctic icebreaker is only accessed by Technically trained and certified scuba divers. Reports of life including snowy groupers have come in from the divers. A must for all Techies!

Popular Dive Sites

The warm waters of the Gulf Stream are closer to the Jupiter Inlet than anywhere in the United States. Pelagic fish such as Sailfish, Wahoo and Dolphin have been observed on the safety stops. The warm waters attract large schools of small fish that attract more fish. Most scuba divers comment they have never seen so much life anywhere in the world.

Loggerhead Reef

Named one of the best 10 dives in America by Rodale's Dive Magazine. Loggerhead is named for the large numbers of Loggerhead turtles that hang out there. It is not uncommon to see five or six turtles on each dive. Loggerheads are protected wildlife so just take pictures and memories.

Captain Kurle's Reef

Popularized by the discovery of Lemon sharks that make this their place during January and February. As many as 100 Lemon Sharks can be observed selecting their partners during this dating season. Scientist from all over the country dive this reef to record the phenomenon. The scientists say this is the only time and place this behavior has been observed. During this courting period, scuba divers drift over the area and are able to take pictures of the animals.

Jupiter High Ledge

This ledge has a relief of over 40' at some spots. Nurse sharks are often seen lying beneath the ledges. Like all the reefs of Jupiter, You can't believe the numbers and variety of fishes you see on these dives. Surveys consistently count over 70 species on each dive.

Hole in the Wall

This is a special world famous dive sight. It is recommended you are an advanced scuba diver or better to go on this one. You begin this dive on a 110' ledge very near the Gulf Stream. Within minutes you drift to a cavern. This cavern is 30' high and 60' long. You can swim through and clearly see the other side from the entrance. What makes this dive special are the large animals that frequent this area. 150 pound Cubera Snapper, 300 to 400 pound Goliath Grouper; and quarter mile long schools of Bonita have all been seen on this dive.

All in all, most scuba diving experts agree, the Jupiter Inlet, servicing Jupiter, Tequesta and Juno Beach is one of the most consistent and best scuba diving destinations anywhere.
